Coronavirus (COVID-19): IRB Guidance

Considerations for Human Subjects Research

The Research Ethics and Compliance (REC) Office plans to continue normal operations during the disruptions caused by COVID-19. We will insure that staff are available to answer questions and process modifications and new protocols.

Researchers needing to make a temporary change (the timing, location, or method of interaction for any interviews, focus groups, recruitment, etc.) should submit a modification of their protocol through the online Cayuse system. Pauses in research are allowed, but protocol modifications may be required. Changes in your research plan to comply with official actions of the State or Federal government, or emergency implementations by the University will require a protocol modification. Contact the REC Office with any questions.

Potential Effects on Studies

Consider the following when determining the how and whether to continue your study:

  • Will the site for your study remain open? Will it allow visitors and/or access to participants?
  • If your protocol requires in-person participation, can it be modified to allow for remote participation?
  • How would the study be affected by quarantined participants?
  • If some participants contracted the virus, how would you continue the study?

Exempt Studies Only

Temporary changes in protocol for exempt studies may be implemented at the PI’s discretion, as long as the changes would not impact the exempt determination. Contact the REC office if you are unsure whether the changes would impact the determination.
