Patent Process

Patents are used to grant inventor rights to new research discoveries or inventions.

Invention Disclosure Form

Research and Sponsored Programs encourages faculty and students to submit an invention disclosure form. After submitting the form, our office will contact you to arrange a meeting to clarify aspects of the disclosure form and outline the next steps of action.

Invention Screening Assessment

Typically the invention disclosure form will undergo a screening assessment through The Office of Technology Management (OTM) at the University of Illinois. The OTM screening assessment provides a recommended course of action for commercialization, where commercial potential of invention will be reviewed by the Intellectual Property Committee.

Invention Protection

The intellectual property committee will present their recommendation to the associate vice president for research and graduate studies, who will determine if Illinois State will pursue patent protection and commercialization efforts.

For additional information, review the full intellectual property policy at Illinois State.
