Intellectual Property

Intellectual Property (IP) refers to a creation of the mind such as an invention, literary work, artistic work, design, or symbols, names and images used in commerce. IP is protected by law and organized into three categories: patents, copyrights, and trademarks. Additional definitions and explanations of intellectual property concepts are available in the IP Terminology glossary.

Scholarship often results in innovative discoveries that can impact society in positive ways. The Office of Research supports scholars considering pursuing intellectual property protections and identifying partners outside the university that can utilize the innovation.
