The Illinois State University IRB has a diverse membership including researchers, non-scientists and representation from the community. The IRB is charged with ensuring that federal regulations regarding human subjects research is conducted in accordance with Federal regulations.
The IRB is guided by the ethical principles embodied in The Belmont Report and by additional local standards and expectations.
The Illinois State University IRB has an approved Federalwide Assurance (FWA00000112) on file with the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP). Our IRB registration number is IORG0000486.
Investigators who plan to use human subjects in research are responsible for obtaining written approval from the IRB prior to conducting research involving human subjects, taking whatever steps are deemed necessary to protect subjects, and abiding by reporting and recordkeeping requirements of the IRB.
As of January 19, 2018, the IRB Departmental Representatives system is no longer mandatory in most academic departments. Investigators are still encouraged to contact their department representatives for guidance in matters pertaining to human subjects research.
Submission means submission to the REC office after protocol review by the Department Representative. Adequate time should be given for review by the department. Please note that submission dates and deadlines are applicable only to protocols requiring Full Board Review. Exempt and Expedited Review protocols are reviewed continuously.
